Hammerhead Shark Habitat

The hammerhead shark is generally found in waters that are warmer than 72F and no deeper than 65 feet. It can be found all over the world but prefers to stay out of tropical waters and waters that are too cold. They are generally known to eat shrimps and krill, although some humans have been attacked by hammerhead sharks it is believed that it is more probably caused by misunderstandings than anything else. Although commonly hunting solo the hammerhead shark can form minor hunting schools during the days in order to maximise the effectiveness of their performance.

Hammerhead Shark habitat – Inshore

The hammerhead shark habitat is preferably inshore where it is able to hunt for food much more effectively and the waters are somewhat warmer than they otherwise are out at sea. Hammerhead sharks even find their way into very shallow areas and it has been reported that hammerhead sharks has been spotted in waters not deeper than 5 feet. The hammerhead shark is a pretty quiet animal which likes to just hang around among reefs and seamounts awaiting an opportunity to hunt. Although some choose to migrate there are some hammerhead shark habitats which are used by permanent populations.

Hammerhead Shark habitat – Offshore

Obviously the hammerhead shark also moves out to the open sea every once and awhile both to find prey but also in order to migrate to cooler latitudes during the summer months, but during this time the hammerhead shard does never leave the safety of the continental shelf. During the migration there is no hammerhead shark habitat but instead a large number of hammerhead sharks come together to form very large migration schools, these will eventually resolve as soon as they reach their destination. Although most hammerhead sharks prefer to reside inshore and in bays there are some that spend their entire life out on the continental shelf in deeps not deeper than 900 feet.
